Phyrene System Description
The Phyrene System is comprised of Phyrene, a late-stage red giant of high metallicity, and Ember, a distant white dwarf companion that is a remnant of a star that has become a planetary nebula. It contains four planets and a massive metal-rich asteroid belt. The system was initially overlooked because drone advanced survey indicated the absence of any remotely habitable worlds. The scoutship Industrious made a more extensive survey in 92 that revealed the presence of the asteroid belt inside the orbit of the innermost gas giant Gigos. The expedition named the system after the captain of the Industrious.
Independent miners soon flocked to the system. After several ships were lost to turbulence while skimming Gigos, a ramshackle refueling station was established on the icy second moon. The disgruntled operators of this station promptly named the moon Dismal and the station as Dismal Down.
Large strikes of vanadium and manganese in the early 200s led the system’s refiners to consolidate their operations at a new facility in the belt, which they named Refinery. The consortium, now called Phyrene Belt Management (PBM), enjoyed three centuries of prosperity before the richest deposits were exhausted.
Increasing commercial traffic led to the construction of a Transtar service station at Trailing in 494. This station gradually drew traffic away from Dismal Down, leaving behind a motley assortment of independent miners and ne’er-do-wells. Bulk mining of commodity metals continues, as does wildcat prospecting for small lodes of more valuable metals.
